Video Montage of the Week!
This year we expanded our summer camp program to include a second site in Las Galeras, a small fishing community on the northwest coast of the island. It was a bit of a challenge to get this camp up and running since we didn't have the connections that we have in Madre Vieja but we persevered. We made a few contacts including Ana Reyes from the mayor's office and Roberto Guzman, proprietor of Casa Dorado, where we stayed for the week. Both helped us gather and organize the students. At 9:00 on the first day of camp we had exactly one camper. But the kids slowly meandered in (not quite sure what to expect themselves) and by 9:45 we had about 25 campers. By the end of the week we had over 50. We focused on community, literacy, art, STEM activities and softball (Mujeres al poder!)

We also bought a number of books to read with the campers. We then gave each camper a book and donated the rest to the school.
Summer Camp Week 2: Madre Vieja
We continued our community building in Madre Vieja by running a one week version of the camp we have run there since 2010. The focus this year will be on the environment using El Lorax as the anchor text. We also wove in the STEM activities we did in Las Galeras. About 100 campers attended this year!!!
